A guest book needs pens that work on its pages. A dessert table needs someone to set out the food and the serving supplies. That collection of family photographs needs a way to stand up.
None of that is as fun to shop for as the guest book, desserts or frames. But it’s worth sorting out before adding another idea to the list.
You can make a wedding personal with a few things you care about. Maybe that’s a family dessert, a song you both love, or photographs of people you want to include. You don’t have to find a custom version of everything on the table.
Try one idea all the way through
Take the dessert table. What will you serve? Who is providing it, and when will it arrive? Does it need refrigeration? Who sets it out, replenishes it and packs up what’s left? Check those arrangements with the caterer or baker and the venue before buying display pieces.
Now think about a guest serving themselves. Can they tell what’s available? Do they have the right plate, napkin and utensil? Is there room to set something down? Ask the food provider how ingredients and dietary questions will be handled.
That’s a more useful check than adding another decoration because the table looks empty in a practice photo.

Pack for the person opening the box
If someone else will set up your details, group the supplies by where they belong. Put the guest book, pens and sign together. Add a quick photo of the arrangement if placement matters to you. Label the box with the destination and the name of the person handling it.
For anything borrowed or sentimental, decide who takes it home. Tell that person directly. A note inside a box helps, but it doesn’t replace asking whether they can do the job.

When planning decorations for our barn or gardens, bring us your placement questions before you buy materials. Anything involving hanging, power, candles or a walkway needs a practical check with the venue. A picture of your idea makes that conversation easier.
And give yourself permission to stop. If the detail matters to you, make a plan for it. If it’s another purchase, another box and another job you’re not excited about, you can leave it out.
